The Stack Overflow Paradox: How AI is Starving Its Own Source of Intelligence
Exploring why the 78% drop in Stack Overflow activity signals a dangerous "knowledge plateau" for the next generation of coding AI.
According to recent news, Stack Overflow is witnessing an unprecedented collapse in community engagement, with new question volume in December 2025 falling to just 3862, a staggering 78% decline compared to December 2024. This trend is corroborated by the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, which reveals that 84% of developers have now fully integrated AI tools into their workflows. The reasoning behind this shift is twofold: developers are drawn to the "instant nature" of AI assistants and, perhaps more importantly, the "zero-judgment" environment they provide. Unlike the traditional forum experience, an AI does not downvote a beginner's question or close a thread as a "duplicate," offering a safe space for iterative learning that the human community has struggled to maintain.

Not my area of expertise, but it could be that the AI will get better at intuition eventually (running simulations and learning what works/doesn’t work when it tries to be intuitive), but there may be a lot of breakdowns and failure until that happens. And of course, it can never be as truly intuitive as a human, or able to understand the panic of a coding error that brings down a platform at 3am…
